Does Prayer Really Work? – My Family’s Testimony of Faith During Financial Crisis
A Personal Testimony by Agrippa – A journey through financial hardship that strengthened our family’s faith in God’s Word and the power of prayer.
Does prayer really work?
Yes, my friend! It works all the time! But let me tell you, it took a season of deep financial hardship to truly understand this truth in my bones.
The Question That Changed Everything
When I gave my life to Christ over twenty-five years ago, I was skeptical about prayer. I’d just come from a world where praying seemed impractical—the last resort when logic failed. So whenever I was asked to pray, in a group setting, my honest reaction was:
“Does praying really work? Will God even hear me? My past is dark—how could He look at my prayers?”
I was a baby Christian, trembling with doubt. I didn’t know the power that was available to me through faith and God’s Word. But God, in His mercy, was about to teach me—in the most challenging way possible.
When Everything Collapsed
Shortly after my wife, Janet, and I gave our lives to Christ, we established a thriving IT Consulting and Accounting business. We were building something meaningful, providing for our growing family. Our five children—Michael, Joshua, Sarah, Hannah, and David—were teenagers, their futures bright.
Then came the “big something.”
Our business collapsed almost overnight. Financial devastation swept through our family like a storm. For roughly two years, the uncertainty was suffocating. We faced the terrifying possibility of losing our home. Every night, my wife and I would lie awake, wondering:
“Will praying really work when our finances are destroyed? Can faith feed our children? Does God care about our mortgage?”
But here’s what I didn’t know then: God was about to show us that prayer doesn’t just work—it transforms everything.
How My Family Became a Prayer Army

As the head of my household, I had to make a choice. I could retreat into despair, or I could lead my family toward God. I chose faith.
My wife Janet—who had actually given her heart to Jesus a year before I did—stood beside me. She became my partner not just in marriage, but in intercession. Together, we sat down with Michael, Joshua, Sarah, Hannah, and David and explained our situation honestly.
“We’re facing something hard,” I told them, “but God is bigger than this. We’re going to learn to pray together. We’re going to trust God’s Word together. And we’re going to see Him work.”
And they believed me. All five of our teenagers gave their lives to Christ during this season. They made God’s Word their priority. They committed to prayer like I had never seen before.
Do you know what happened? Michael came home with excellent grades. Joshua joined our home cell group and became a faithful worshipper. Sarah excelled in her studies while mentoring younger believers. Hannah led a youth group prayer circle. David’s character became a testimony to his peers.
Does praying really work? When a family prays together and teaches their children to trust God’s Word, yes—miracles happen.
Mark 11:22 Jesus said to them, Have faith in God;
This was our anchor verse during the darkest days. When I reminded my children—and myself—to have faith in God, we stopped looking at the problem and started looking at the Problem-Solver. Our finances didn’t change overnight. Our legal battles continued. But our focus shifted.
What Prayer Revealed in Our Hearts
During those two years of financial crisis, I discovered something profound: prayer isn’t just about changing circumstances. Prayer is about changing you.
I learned that I had been given a voice—not just to speak, but to worship God in the midst of storms. The first church we attended as a family of brand-new believers invited me to lead worship, even though I was still learning. Why? Because desperation had driven me to my knees, and the Holy Spirit had taught me something that theological training might have delayed: true worship comes from breaking, not from perfection.
My wife learned to intercede with a power I had never witnessed. Michael learned that excellence in school was an act of obedience to God. Joshua, Sarah, Hannah, and David discovered that faith in hard times produces a character no classroom could teach.
We started hosting a home cell group in our living room. Can you imagine? In the middle of a financial crisis, we opened our struggling home to others who needed prayer and God’s Word. And in that act of obedience, God’s presence became more real than our poverty.
Mark 11:23-25 I can guarantee this truth: This is what will be done for someone who doesn’t doubt but believes what he says will happen: He can say to this mountain, Be uprooted and thrown into the sea, and it will be done for him. That’s why I tell you to have faith that you have already received whatever you pray for, and it will be yours. Whenever you pray, forgive anything you have against anyone. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your failures.
Notice something critical here: it’s not just about speaking to mountains. It’s about believing you’ve already received. It’s about forgiveness. Prayer works, but you have a role to play. You must believe. You must forgive. You must align yourself with God’s Word.
During our crisis, I had to forgive those I felt had wronged us. Janet had to release bitterness. Our children had to let go of anger at their changing circumstances. In that letting go, prayer became powerful.
Does Praying Really Work When Finances Collapse?
We live in uncertain times. Global economic pressures. Job losses. Inflation. Rising costs. Many of you reading this are asking the same questions I asked twenty-plus years ago:
“Will praying really work when experiencing financial anxiety? Does prayer actually change financial hardship? Can faith protect my family in a recession?”
From my life—and my family’s life—I can tell you with absolute certainty: Yes. Prayer works. Not always in the way we expect. Not always on our timeline. But God’s Word is faithful.
The Holy Spirit, Our Counselor
During those desperate two years, I learned that I wasn’t alone in my prayers. The Holy Spirit wasn’t a distant force—He was a teacher, a counselor, standing beside me in every prayer.
He taught me what to pray. He whispered assurance when doubt crept in. He reminded me of God’s promises. He showed me how to lead my family with faith instead of fear. When I would lie awake at night, wondering “Does prayer really work?” the Holy Spirit would settle my heart and say, “Trust me. Believe what you’ve prayed. I am faithful.”
This is available to you, too. You don’t need special qualifications or seminary training. You just need to surrender to the Holy Spirit’s leading and trust that He knows how to teach you to pray.
Does praying really work when the Holy Spirit is your guide? Absolutely. Every single time.
The Miracle We Still Talk About
After roughly two years of crisis—though it felt like a lifetime—something shifted. The legal battles began to resolve. God opened doors we didn’t know existed. Finances began to stabilize. By early 2019, we could finally sigh with relief.
But here’s what amazes me most: we didn’t just survive the crisis. We were transformed by it. Our family was welded together in a way that success never could have accomplished. Our faith became real, not theoretical. Our children learned that God is faithful, not because a pastor said so, but because they experienced it.
Extended family members still call us and say, “God is GREAT.” Friends who watched us suffer through those years now call us with their own crises, asking how to find faith like ours. The answer is simple:
“Go to God with your whole heart. Pray with faith. Believe His Word. And let the Holy Spirit teach you.”
My Challenge to You in These Uncertain Times
If you’re reading this and you’re facing financial hardship, job loss, uncertainty about tomorrow—I’m writing directly to you.
You don’t need luck. You don’t need to pretend everything is fine. You need to pray. You need to trust God’s Word. You need to understand that your crisis might be the very place where God becomes most real to you.
Like the Apostle Paul, I have known abundance, and I have known lack. I have experienced seasons of plenty and seasons of waiting. But through it all, nothing has shaken my devotion to God. Why? Because I’ve seen Him part my Red Sea. I’ve watched Him provide in impossible situations. I’ve felt His presence in the darkest nights.
Does prayer really work, even when everything around you is falling apart? A thousand times—YES!
Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will protect your hearts and your minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
This is the promise: when you pray instead of worry, God’s peace guards your family. That’s not theology—that’s testimony from someone who has lived it.
