In this post I talk about bible verses that teach forgiveness. The topic about forgiveness is always an interesting and emotive one. Whether it\’s about forgiving others or being forgiven, it always brings up hurting stuff hidden away in our hearts.

However, for us Christians, the whole essence of the faith is forgiveness. Jesus came that we should be forgiven and go on to live abundant lives according to the scriptures.

There\’s a verse in the bible which always piques my interest. And it\’s this one in the book of Matthew 5. In fact read the whole chapter to get the gist of the whole matter. But here it is for this post.

\”So if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember there that another believer has something against you, leave your gift at the altar. First go away and make peace with that person. Then come back and offer your gift\”.

(Matthew 5:23-24 GW)

In other words the onus is on you to take the first step. The scripture says, \”as you are about to offer your gift at the altar and there you remember that someone has an issue with you…\”.

It\’s the other person who has an issue with you. But because you are the one who has remembered, it now becomes your responsibility to initiate the peace process. You must take the first forgiveness step in the peace process. Don\’t wait for the other party to get to you, but go to them and make peace.

I tell you the truth..

I have experienced first hand the power that is in this teaching. When you take the first step to ask for forgiveness, you will reap the power of joy flooding your whole being. I tell you the truth, do this and you will have a great testimony.

With that said, let\’s look at some bible verses on this deep topic of forgiveness. For this exercise I have curated a post from this authority website. So read on and later follow that link to read the original article.

Forgiveness

\"Bible

We all appreciate being forgiven, but forgiving others, especially when they have wounded us, feels like a different thing. Emotions get involved. We decide they need to suffer for the hurt they\’ve caused, and we delay offering forgiveness, sometimes for years, decades, or forever.

When we hurt, we want the person who is the source of that wound to hurt as much as we do. But the Bible provides a different perspective.

\”Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. Don’t take the law into your own hands\” (Romans 12:19TLB).

As Jesus suffered on the cross, he asked God to forgive those who wrongly condemned him to death. Often those who offend us never ask for our forgiveness or admit any wrong-doing. Forgiving these people is perhaps the hardest. But Jesus is our example for forgiving those who don\’t appear to be sorry or ask to be forgiven.

\”Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing\” (Mark 11:25 NIV).

While it may seem forgiving others is to their advantage, you are really the one who benefits most. Unforgiveness breeds anger, and swallowed anger results in depression. When you choose to forgive others, you give yourself a gift. Once you decide to forgive, you can move on with your life instead of stagnating in hurt and resentment, and in forgiving, you mirror a forgiving God.

\”If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins\” (Matthew 6: 14-15 NLT).
